Behind the numbers
United Nations DESA, Population Division World Population Prospects 2024 · medium projection
Population is interpolated between consecutive 1 January totals. Births and deaths are spread evenly over the actual seconds in each year; net growth is births minus deaths. Daily and yearly counters use UTC.
These are statistical estimates, not actual events recorded each second. Population totals and cumulative natural growth use different data series and may differ slightly.
Good to know
Are these real-time birth and death records?+
No. Registration and reporting delays make a single global record of events each second unavailable. This clock uses UN annual data to model continuous estimates at average rates.
Which time zone does “today” use?+
All counters use UTC. Daily totals reset at midnight; yearly totals reset on 1 January and switch to that year’s data. Leap years use 366 days.
Why do other population clocks show different numbers?+
Different data editions, projection variants, time references and interpolation methods produce different estimates. This tool uses the global medium projection from World Population Prospects 2024. Projections are not final statistics.
